Does anyone know anything about programs at schools that offer both an MD and an MBA joint major? The only one I have been able to find thus far has been at Northwestern, and because this major is so new, there are few schools who have it, and even fewer with ranking information.
If anyone knows anything about it, your opinion would be appreciated.
I personally am not familiar with the combined MD-MBA programs, but I do know people who made their own combined program at University of Chicago. They basically took one year off (I think only one year) to take the required MBA classes - usually after the first or second year of medical school.
As for rankings of programs - you'd basically have to look at the separate rankings for each medical school and their MBA program. I would assume the combined programs have more coursework that focuses on the areas that overlap between medicine and business issues.
Interestingly, it appears most of the combined programs are being advertised by the schools as being a way to help prepare for HMO / managed care issues as well as management aspects in medicine. However, the individuals who I know that did their own program were actually more interested in money management / investment opportunities within the biomedical and medical fields. While the programs advertise a focus for people who will work primarily in the medical field, the people I know were mostly interested in working in the financial world.
I did a quick google search for Joint MD-MBA, and I found the following information:
]Wake Forest joint programs - with curriculum info for MD-MBA
University of Rochestor Joint MD-MBA program info
Temple University MD-MBA information
MD-MBA program at Yale with more detailed information
Case Western Reserve MD-MBA program with detailed information on their program
There appear to be many other programs that offer this combined curriculum - hopefully this will give you a start in researching the programs.
