Hi all,
This year I turned 20 years old. I live in the United Kingdom, and I'm looking to go to university to study psychology. The question I wanted to ask is - do you think its a bit too late for me to be venturing into psychology? Its always been a keen interest of mine, but do you think that its something that I would have had to have taken up before now, or would it be okay for me to begin my studies this year? I know that a lot of people begin their ventures into psychology from a young age, such as when they leave high school.
Even though I've just turned 20 this year, is it still not too late for me to start?
I know this must sound fairly strange, but its just a little thing thats been on my mind.
Thank you in advance for any help.
We are all in trouble if 20 is too late to begin studying something. It's not like you are considering trying to become a professional tennis player or something. After all, the brain still works at 20 and even beyond!
I agree. If you were able to do it before, there's no reason you can't do it now. Every person's situation is different, but the main issues for anyone considering a career change are probably similar - you have to decide if the financial cost is tolerable - the cost of school, plus any cost of lost revenue from your current job. Also, can you family situation tolerate the change - will it mean putting in extra hours at school in addition to a job, while you have ongoing responsibilities to your spouse / kids / significant other.
I agree with the above post that 20 is a young age, and I'm reluctant to even say that it would be a "career change" - most poeple are still in college at age 20.
I've known many people who decide to become a doctor after age 30, and several more after age 40. At least in the US, the path to becoming a psychologist is less grueling than that of becoming a psychiatrist.
Thanks for the advice guys. I know it must have sounded like a silly question but it was just something that had crossed my mind.
Thanks!
