i have a bad academic record as an econ major...i plan on doing a post bac premed next year will the schools i am applying to weight the pre-med courses more than the bachelors i will recieve?/
from what I understand science courses hold much more weight than nonscience courses, but med schools will not disregard grades in other courses. If one oould explain why one had a bad gpa during certain years, it would certainly help
All grades are important. So, depending on how bad your academic record was, it may not be possible to repair it.
There are a variety of factors that go into decisions on who to accept into medical school. In your situation, you will want to be prepared to explain why your recent grades in your post bac program are a better indication of how you can perform in medical school than your poor undergrad grades.
Hi...
I guess it all depends on how bad "bad" is... (but please DO NOT feel obliged to publish your GPA in this forum! It's nobody else's business, IMHO.)
The main thing is, as Dr.Admin points out, they WILL look at your entire academic record. If you show marked improvement between your early academic years and your later work, including the post-bac program, that will stand you in good stead. Also, a strong score on the MCAT will be a great boost to the ol' application (and confidence level!).
Basically, from here on out, kick butt and take names. You can't afford not to if you want to get into medical school. I wish you well. 🙂
